The Anniversary

The Anniversary Closed 16th April 2005 from London Ticket Web

The Anniversary Set in South London, the The Anniversary centres around a formidable and domineering 'merry widow' who delights in getting the better of her family. On the day of her and her late husband's wedding anniversary, her beloved sons and bedeviled daughters-in-law gather for the annual party that quickly turns into a hilarious battle of wits as 'Mum' schemes, plots and uses any means necessary to keep her chicks in the nest.  Sheila Hancock stars as 'Mum' along with Rosie Cavaliero as 'Karen', Liam Garrigan as 'Tom', Tony Maudsley as 'Henry' and Madeleine Worrall as 'Shirley'.
Sheila Hancock, one of our best-loved comedy actresses, originally played the young daughter-in-law, 'Karen' in the 1966 West End premiere of The Anniversary, and reprised the role opposite Bette Davis in the cult screen version eight years later.  She has also recently published her memoir The Two of Us, about her life with her husband, the actor John Thaw.

Popular theatre at its best.

What's New

The Anniversary  Closed 16th April 2005 Comedy by Bill MacIlwraith. Directed by Denis Lawson. Designs by Robin Don.

Theatre Review

The Anniversary - the play is primarily an excuse for Hancock to be unstoppably, hilariously, sublimely frightful.
The Times

Sir David Attenborough sometimes crawls to within inches of toxic tarantulas and rib-retching baboons. But never has TV's jungle expert encountered a beast quite as deadly as Mum, the character played by Shelia Hancock in the West End's glorious new revival... Miss Hancock, turbo-charging back to form after her widowhood, is utterly foul as the old bag - by which, of course, one intends a huge compliment... At little over two hours, The Anniversary is a riot.
