Becket London Theatre Play

Becket Closed 11 December 2004 is a Play by Jean Anouilh in a new translation Frederic and Stephen Raphael. Directed by John Caird with designs by Stephen Brimson Lewis, lighting by Peter Mumford and music by John Cameron.

Anouilh's timeless play, written in 1959, captures the conflict between love and duty. As a young man, Thomas à Becket was anything but a saint and, as King Henry II's closest friend, enjoyed the lifestyle only royalty could afford. The two men spent their time drinking and wenching until an act of friendship tore them apart. Henry made Becket Archbishop of Canterbury and finally, with a purpose to his life, Becket followed his new vocation with such zeal that their two worlds could only collide, with devastating consequences.

The cast of 15 features Dougray Scott as 'Becket' and Jasper Britton as 'Henry II'.

Theatre Review

Becket Closed 11 December 2004 It is an effective theatrical entertainment. It enjoys debunking the mystique of royalty even while building up a separate mystique around Becket's secession from king to God.
The Financial Times

To the shortlist of bisexual kings of England Jasper Britton contributes one new name with his superlative performance as a volatile, vulnerable Henry II Scott makes him an enigma.
