Closed 26 February 2005
By the Bog of Cats is a Play by Marina Carr. Directed by Dominic Cooke with designs by Hildegard Bechtler. Set in the mysterious and stark landscape of the bogs of rural Ireland, Carr's lyrical and timeless play tells the story of Hester Swane, an Irish traveler with a deep and unearthly connection to her land. Tormented by the memory of a mother who deserted her, Hester is once again betrayed, this time by the father of her child, the man she loves, on the brink of despair and heartbreak, she embarks on a terrible journey of vengeance as the secrets of her tangled history are revealed. Powerful and at times hilarious, the drama unfolds towards its tragic conclusion. The American film and stage actress Holly Hunter makes her West End debut in the role of 'Hester Swane'.

Theatre Review

By the Bog of Cats Holly Hunter - The American film and stage actress Holly Hunter makes her West End debut in the role of 'Hester Swane'.

By the Bog of Cats An enthralling psychological drama. Carr has a lovely eye and ear for Irish manners... Dominic Cooke's finely modulated production is at its taut best in the terrible finale... unmissable.
London Evening Standard

A powerfully cast and poetically well-gauged production by Dominic Cooke... Hunter lets rip with an explosive display of scalding scorn and furiously embattled spirit."
The Independent

It is good to welcome an American stage and screen star of considerable distinction. in Dominc Cook's ulta-sensitive production.
The Daily Express

By The Bog Of Cats, like Hunter's performance as the protagonist, is so enjoyably theatrical that it is almost good. The artificiality is part of the fun. The Financial Times
