| | What's New | Don Carlos Closed 30 April 2005 Play by Friedrich Schiller in a new adaptation by Mike Poulton. Directed by Michael Grandage. |
| Theatre Review | Don Carlos - Who would have thought it - Schiller in Shaftesbury Avenue? But the spellbound audience and the loud huzzahs bore testament not only to the grip of this great romantic tragedy: they paid tribute to the brilliance of Michael Grandage's Sheffield Crucible production... What makes it a great play is that Schiller espouses freedom while understanding power. And if any one performance dominates the evening it is Derek Jacobi's superb Philip II... Grandage has carefully orchestrated every aspect of the tragedy... The evening is a triumph that at last puts Schiller centre stage." The Guardian There have been few occasions in my theatre-going life when I have been more comprehensively thrilled, moved or excited. Friedrich Schiller's classic tragedy of 16th-century Spain stirs a fatal brew of politics and sexual longing, libertarian urges and religious fanaticism. Michael Grandage's dark night of the soul production stirs these antagonistic elements to a fever-pitch of argument and betrayal... Mike Poulton's poetic new translation makes the conflict memorable... This Don Carlos, with its timely warnings about religious fanaticism, is stamped with greatness." The London Evening Standard Derek Jacobi gives an equally starry performance, one which confirms him in all his still majesty as the Gielgud of our time..." The Express
