Epitaph for George Dillon

A domestic and political drama of hope and disillusionment set in a lower middle class household in South London during the 1950's.

The Elliots live their unhappy suburban life until Kate Elliot brings home a surrogate for her son killed in war, the charismatic and bohemian George Dillon. He is an aspiring actor and penniless writer recently freed from the constraints of employment, his fall cushioned by the kindness and generosity of Kate Elliot.

The cast stars Joseph Fiennes as 'George Dillon' and Francesca Annis as 'Ruth Gray' along with Anne Reid, Geoffrey Hutchings, Zoe Tapper, Dorothy Atkinson, Stephen Greif, Hugh Simon and Alex Dunbar.

Epitaph For George Dillon was written before Look Back In Anger but opened a year later in Oxford in 1957. Subsequently it moved to The Royal Court Theatre, followed by a season in the West End (also at the Comedy Theatre). It then transferred to the Henry Miller and John Golden Theatres in New York, where it garnered three Tony nominations including one for Best New Play.

What's New

Epitaph for George Dillon is a play by John Osborne and Anthony Creighton. Directed by Peter Gill.

Theatre Reviews

Epitaph for George Dillon There's terrific support from Anne Reid as the vacuously kind and cheerful Mrs Elliott, and Geoffrey Hutchings as her vile husband, but there isn't a single weak performance in this acidly funny production which suggests that this neglected play might just be Osborne's greatest. The Daily Telegraph

Gill's production demonstrates this collaborative work is a genuine ensemble piece, with a cast graced by Anne Reid's superb performance as the prattling but controlling mother. The Independent

Gill's fine production honours an unjustly neglected play. The Guardian
