| | What's New | High Society at The Shaftesbury Theatre has posted a closing notice for 21 January 2006 Musical by Cole Porter with additional lyrics by Susan Birkenhead and book by Arthur Kopit based on the play The Philadelphia Story by Philip Barry. Directed by Ian Talbot with choreography by Gillian Gregory and designs by Paul Farnsworth. |
| Theatre Review | High Society It is never quite clear whether it is aiming for wise-cracking comedy or full-blown romantic yearning, an unpretentious song and dance spectacular or something more sophisticated. As a result, Ian Talbot's production never quite achieves a satisfying coherence. Nevertheless, there remains much to enjoy... Jerry Hall gets top billing, even though she has only the small part of the matriarch of the filthy rich Lord family. She's not a natural actress, or singer, or dancer come to that, but she remains a striking beauty and gives a poignant performance as the dignified wife of a notorious philanderer... This High Society may not be quite out of the top drawer, but some of the magic remains. The Daily Telegraph
One explanation for these characters' reappearance is that, thanks to a generous scattering of Cole Porter songs, the show comes with tunes one can hum again and again. Another is that the director, Ian Talbot, had a success with the show when he staged it in Regent's Park in 2003. And the clincher is that Talbot has attracted a famous personage to his company. Yes, Jerry Hall plays the materfamilias, Mother Lord... Mother Lord is a rather uninteresting supporting character. So you could say that Hall's interpretation is well-judged. She is tall, elegant, nice, and smiles big smiles The Times |
