| A Life in Theatre | A Life in Theatre Closed 30 April 2005 from London Ticket Web | A Life in Theatre Closed 30 April 2005 A hilarious and poignant play about two actors, stage veteran 'Robert' and aspiring young newcomer 'John'. Set both on stage and behind the scenes in a fading small town rep, the piece follows their friendship and their rivalry as they battle with the cruel uncertainties of their profession. Inspired by Mamet's early backstage experiences and his own brief career as an actor, this, acutely observed, bittersweet comedy delivers all the absurdity, the joy and the heartache of a life in the theatre. This production features Patrick Stewart as 'Robert' and Joshua Jackson as 'John'. Patrick Stewart is an international star who has also remained true to the stage, although best known all over the world for his performances in the blockbuster sci-fi films Xmen and the sequel X2 and playing the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the universally popular cult television and film series, Star Trek. Joshua Jackson makes his West End stage debut in this production. He is perhaps best known for playing the role of 'Pacey Witter' in the popular television series Dawson's Creek. Jackson says "I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to do this play in the West End and anticipate a learning and growing experience on the stage. Lindsay Posner directed a revival of David Mamet's Oleanna in 2004. |

| Theatre Review | A Life in Theatre David Mamet's A Life in the Theatre lasts 85 minutes, but, unlike some pieces that are aeons longer, it packs three plays into its short, enjoyable span. The play comes in 26 scenes. it is, then, very literally a sketchy work. Yet there is human truth and pathos here as well as humour that, yes, sometimes veers too far into caricature. A Chekhov parody is ludicrously wan and a sea rescue far too silly, but when Stewart’s Robert plays a surgeon haplessly fumbling his lines over a prone body, it is hilarious. I have not laughed so much since the last serious episode of Casualty. The Times Mr. Stewart is a pleasure to watch The Daily Mail |
