| Otherwise Engaged | Otherwise Engaged Theatre tickets from London Ticket Web | Otherwise Engaged Publisher Simon Hench is witty, urbane, sophisticated, selfish and accustomed to keeping himself at a graceful distance from the messy distractions of his family and friends. He has a problem, though – well, several actually – only he just doesn't know it yet. As Simon settles in for a quiet Saturday night with his new recording of Wagner's Parsifal, he is besieged by a steady stream of unwelcome visitors, and his usually cool demeanor begins to buckle as life finally catches up with him. Stars Richard E. Grant as 'Simon Hench' along with Anthony Head as 'Jeff Golding' and David Bamber as 'Bernard Wood'. Simon Gray's wickedly sharp, satirical, award-winning comedy Otherwise Engaged was first performed in 1975 with a cast that included Alan Bates, Nigel Hawthorne, Julian Glover and Ian Charleson. The show was an instant success in the West End, winning the 'Best Play' awards from the Evening Standard, Variety Club and Plays and Players. This new production for 2005 will be the first West End revival since the original production. |

| | What's New | Otherwise Engaged is a Comedy by Simon Gray. Directed by Simon Curtis. Otherwise Engaged stars Richard E. Grant who has starred in more than sixty films over the past twenty years, including his iconic performances in the 1987 cult classic Withnail and I. |
| Theatre Reviews | 30 years on, the play is receiving its first West End revival and it leaves no doubt that Otherwise Engaged is a modern classic of English high comedy - and something more than that, too... The play's satisfying structure is built on a single clever conceit. Line by line and scene by scene the play is consistently amusing, and at first ones sympathies are all with the besieged publisher. Gradually, however, Gray and that fine actor Richard E Grant expose a far less appealing side of the character. On the surface, Otherwise Engaged seems light as air. Underneath, however, it is as hard as nails. The Daily Telegraph Richard E. Grant, with his gleaming lyric tenor, his glacially blue eyes and his super-suave (if un-1970s) persona, brings Simon keenly to life. The whole cast is strong, with particularly vivid performances from Anthony Head as the swaggering, bibulous Jeff and Amanda Drew as Simon's pained wife Beth. The Financial Times Richard E. Grant is a masterly Simon. The play, high in intellectual tannin, is excellently done. The Daily Mail
a pleasurable and rewarding evening. The Independent |
